Overview

Kunyu Mountain Shaolin Kung Fu School

Kunyu Mountain is located inside a national forest park in Shandong Province, roughly two hours from Yantai city. The setting is genuinely remote — mountains, forest, and clean air — which many students cite as one of the school's strongest points alongside the training itself.

Training

The school teaches multiple styles including Shaolin kung fu, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Qigong. Students typically train 5–6 hours per day across morning and afternoon sessions. The curriculum is structured for progression — students are assessed on arrival and placed in groups based on ability rather than simply how long they've been there.

Daily schedule typically follows this pattern:

  • 6:00 AM: Morning run and warm-up
  • 6:30–8:00 AM: Form practice
  • 8:00–9:00 AM: Breakfast
  • 9:30–11:30 AM: Technique and application training
  • 12:00 PM: Lunch and rest
  • 3:00–5:00 PM: Afternoon training (weapons, conditioning, or sparring)
  • 6:00 PM: Dinner

Accommodation and Food

Students live on-site in shared rooms. Accommodation is described as basic but functional — clean, adequate, and what most foreign students adapt to within the first week. Three meals per day are included.

Visas

Kunyu Mountain is one of the few kung fu schools in China with confirmed ability to sponsor both X2 (up to 180 days) and X1 (over 180 days) student visas. This makes it a practical choice for students planning extended stays.

Who This School Suits

Kunyu Mountain works well for students who want a structured, foreigner-accessible experience without sacrificing genuine training quality. The strong English support makes it particularly suitable for first-time visitors to China. Not the cheapest option, but the infrastructure for foreign students is among the best available.

Pricing

Monthly fees are approximately $800–$950 including accommodation and all meals. Ask the school directly about current rates for longer stays, as discounts are typically available for commitments of three months or more.

Information last reviewed January 2026. Verify current pricing and visa procedures directly with the school before booking.

Training

Expect weekday training blocks focused on forms, basics, conditioning, flexibility, and style-specific applications.

Accommodation & Food

Most long-stay students use school dorms or nearby guesthouses. Meals are usually simple local food with vegetarian options available by request.

Who this suits

Good fit

Students who want structured daily training and can adapt to simple living conditions.

Editor's notes

One of the most consistently recommended schools for foreign students. Operating since 2004 with confirmed X1 visa support. Good choice for first-time visitors to China.

Student experiences

Training was simple, repetitive, and much harder than expected in the first two weeks.
The best results came after asking very specific questions before sending a deposit.
